It became important to use the hummingbird as the logo for this ministry.  It is close to my heart, mind and soul.  It represents freedom, eternal life and love as it sips the nectar from the flowers of Spiritual Truth.  You will see in the following story, the loving and kind ocean of Love I found in Religious Science.  It’s no secret.

I know that you are attracted to the flowers of Spiritual Truth.  Just as the hummingbird returns to its life giving flowers,.  I give this gift of spiritual nectar unto you, as freely as it has been given to me.

The Hummingbird Awakens

By Reverend Theresa C. Desmond

Once upon a time there was a little girl who awoke from a dream.  She awoke from this dream she had been living since she could remember.  And this dream was a nightmare existence.  She was lost in the land of victimization.  She was no other than herself; but she thought she was not.  You might say she was not her Self; in an allegorical way.  She was very lovely.  She was cautious and watchful of the adults around her.  So much so that she would gauge her existence upon how those adults acted.

Well, one day, she was feeling very lonely so she made up a story about how her life would be….it was a hellish existence, yet she managed to be herself in the mist of this foggy, yet awake-asleep existence.

She was in and out of higher consciousness.  She thought not of good things happening to her.  She thought of the terrible, terrible plight of her little self.  She was so afraid.  She was afraid to speak; lest she be tumbled to the linoleum by an outthrust fist from those whom she loved so dearly.  She learned to quell her fears with anger and bitterness, mixed in with joy and love.  Confusion was her daily bread.

There seemed no way of getting out of this nightmarish existence.  She saw her whole life before her, lifeless, limp as a dishrag; her mouth shaping and forming words that little girls should not say without a little soap to help them keep their mouths clean.  She could not find her voice.  She was not allowed to speak her Truth.  She became physically ill as she held the bitterness within.  She was in and out of hospitals and emergency rooms.

Had it not been for occasional extended visits with her grandmother; she would to this day, still be in the dream.  Grandmother told her stories of wonderment, amazement and miracles!  Grandmother told of herbs, and magick.  She shared ‘secrets’ with this precious little girl.  These were fun secrets. Grandmother would hand her gifts and say  “Here, I will give  you this,  but you mustn’t tell anyone I gave it to you!”  “For you are special, as special as the dew that blesses the greenery around the garden; you are fresh, sparkling love.”  “You are destined for great things.  Your beauty will precede you because you have an open heart!”

The words echoed in her ears as she heard them.  She carried these wonderful words in delight; in her heart.  With time, her grandmother made her transition from this world into another.  But Grandmother’s words remained with her as she grew up.  And her nightmarish existence was lessened day after day; for she came to believe Grandmother’s words.

One day, she awoke from this dream and realized she did have a life in the matter.  She awakened with the song of her grandmother on her lips “here, I will give you this gift, but you mustn’t tell anyone I gave it to you!”  “For you are special; as special as the dew that blesses the greenery around the garden; you are fresh, sparkling love.”  “You are destined for great things.”  Your beauty will precede you because you have an open heart!”

Her father became ill in 2005; she left her family to attend to him.  She shaved him, she loved him; she sat by his bed; she comforted him.  Father told her of his youth and the days in New Mexico where he was raised, near the Rio Grande, the tall trees, the lush vegetation on the ground; how he had worn a path to the river; how he enjoyed swimming holes and escaping to the Mother Nature; how blue the sky when he laid down in the tall grass on the banks of that river.  He breathed a deep sigh.

We both stared out that hospital room window; the rain was coming down onto the window, the wind was blowing, the tree tops were waving back and forth.    And there was silence between this father and his daughter; as she held his hand in hers.  Then there came a voice she had not known before…

He asked in earnestness “what do you think heaven is like.”  Well, I think heaven is like this, Dad-  It is whatever you want it to be-It is like the places you described to me.  It is with a blue-blue skiy, and tall grasses growing, trees swaying in the breeze, Sun shining brightly upon you!”  It is all this and more.

And he looked at me and smiled.  Then, He asked me if he could come visit me whenever he wanted.  I replied, “yes, yes, oh, yes!”   You can come anytime.

And so the awakening came with the closure of her Father’s life on this earth on January 7, 2006.  The services were held.  The casket was lowered into the gravesite.  There seemed to be nothing left to do.  So she cherished every moment as she awakened slowly from the dream she had dreamed of as a little girl; and she thought … “there is nothing more to do”.  And so she bid her brothers, sister and mother a farewell.

She came home to her garden and as she sat upon the bench; she thought “there is nothing more to do”.  And she thought of her Father asking if he could come visit her anytime he wanted.  The sky was blue with wispy clouds, the trees were swaying in the breeze.  She looked up and saw a hummingbird in her line of site; and he held his place in mid air-wings fluttering.  And words formed on her lips-“Daddy, is that you?”  The hummingbird fluttered there for a few more seconds, circled the garden and returned to her.  In recognition, she smiled, a tear rolled down her cheek.  She knew all was well.  And the hummingbird disappeared as quickly as he had appeared.  And she was awakened as never before…

For you see, it is Spirit always saying to YOU:  “Here, I give  you this gift, but you mustn’t tell anyone I gave it to you!”  “For you are special, as special as the dew that blesses the greenery around the garden; you are fresh, sparkling love.”  “You are destined for great things!  Your beauty precedes you because you have an open heart!”

Ah, but this is not the end of the story, only a beginning.  To this day, it matters not where this little dreaming girl/woman goes.  She knows she is awakened unto light, unto love and unto heartfelt soulful love.  She fully awakened from the dream!

Wherever she goes, a hummingbird comes to visit her and she knows that she knows that she knows.   She knows what to do.  She smiles.   She breathes in the mystery of life!

It became important to use the hummingbird as the logo for this ministry.  It is close to my heart, mind and soul.  It represents freedom, eternal life and love as it sips the nectar from the flowers of Spiritual Truth.

I know that you will return to Gold Coast Religious Science just as the hummingbird returns to its life force, the flowers of Spiritual Truth.  I give this gift unto you, freely as it has been given to me.

And so it is.
